In this module, I have been looking at narratives and analysing them, all in an attempt to use this knowledge in my own work. The point of this module is to create a unique narrative using a variety of different media, in order to tell a story that is personal to me and showcases my artistic style.
As somebody who loves watching Youtubers like Zoella and other lifestyle vloggers in my pjs with a cup of tea, I am really interested in the way they film their days and how they edit their videos to create a final product that is exciting and fun to watch. To me, I think filming your life, telling your unique story and giving people a personal insight into your daily routines is a perfect narrative for me to explore.
Zoe Elizabeth Sugg (born 28 March 1990) is an English fashion and beauty vlogger, YouTuber, and author. She is best known by her YouTube username Zoella. Her debut novel, Girl Online, was released in November 2014 and broke the record for highest first-week sales of a first-time novelist since Nielsen Bookscan began compiling such records in 1998.
Sugg was working as an apprentice at an interior design company when she created her blog, “Zoella”, in February 2009. By the end of the year it had a thousand followers and as of September 2015 it has received over 540 million total visits. The fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog expanded into a YouTube channel in 2009, while Sugg was working for British clothing retailer New Look. In 2013, Sugg was named as one of the National Citizen Service’s ambassadors, helping to promote the newly launched youth service. The following year she was named as the first “Digital Ambassador” for Mind, the mental health charity.
Zoella is a big inspiration to me, her quirky personality and sense of ease in front of a camera has always made me what to create my own cool videos and to have a fully functional YouTube channel designed to my liking. Vlogging is like a video diary, where you record your life and then edit the footage to create a story of your life, showing the world your true self. Not only is it a great way for you to look back over past memories and things you’ve accomplished, it’s also a way for viewers to understand the sort of person that you are. By showing day to day tasks and little conversations shared between friends, these vlogs act as a keyhole into your unique life, showing people how normal you are but in a glamorized way.
In Zoella’s vlogs she shows her everyday life, filming all the fun little things she gets up to, making sure to document everything no matter how small. By including small tasks like applying her make-up, it shows the viewer parts of her life that only she really sees making you feel as if you’re in on something special and secretive (like if you were allowed backstage at a show). Zoella also talks to the camera, breaking the Fourth Wall, so the viewer feels as if she is talking directly to them, creating a friendly bond.
Music is also added to her vlogs to enhance the footage, making it fun and pleasing to watch, as the music adds a light-hearted feel to the vlog. She also speeds up certain footage as well in order to make long tasks take up less time in the vlog but also to add a funky effect to her videos. Zoella films her vlogs using a Canon camera and so the quality of her shots is very good, never really having anything out of focus and making sure her content looks clear, sharp and professional.
When she edits her videos, the cuts are also clean and they don’t jump from one scene to another too much, making the flow of her videos relaxed. She also varies up her shots with close ups, pans, front facing shots and doesn’t just stick to one angle, meaning that you get to see her life through lots of different ways, making the vlog turn into more of a short film with creativity rather than a documentary styled piece.
Many YouTubers have animations, illustrations or typography personal to them on their videos and channels in order to create a brand and identity for their videos, by doing this the Youtubers are creating a style in which describes their content but also embodies the theme of their videos. Zoella used an animation at the beginning of her Vlogmas videos throughout Decemeber, which gave off Christmassy vibes, showed off her quirky personality and added a unique touch to her videos. By doing this it made her videos seem more elite and professional but it also made the theme of her videos clear and acted as a perfect opening title.
