I am super happy and proud of my finished map and so I can’t wait to tell you all how I actually created my lovely little world Robotopia! I started off with a pencil sketch outline of Ireland on an A3 sketchbook, which was easy enough to do. I had Ireland up on my laptop screen and just sketched it freehand straight onto the paper, next I took a 0.1 black fine liner and went over the outline to make it clean and bold. Then I drew a lovely big banner in the centre of my island for the title. I drew the font with a black fine liner, I tried to make it look like calligraphy so I joined up the letters and made different parts of the letters thicker and thinner.  Slowly I started to add in every little detail in pencil, trying to use the space up as best as I could. I wanted to have illustrations all over the map with cute snippets of text next to them, telling the story of what each illustration stood for. I draw illustrations in a cartoony way, a bit like my favourite artist Nick Sharrat, and they always have… View Post

This was super exciting for me as I couldn’t wait to get my crazy ideas onto paper! I started off by doing a very rough first draft of my island using a pink sharpie. I drew out the shape of Ireland and then began to add in little details, not worrying too much about the design, this was purely me documenting my initial thoughts. So this island is a fun island, full of activities and places of leisure for the residents to relax and find love in. There’s a beach, places to go on dates and there is also a scary lab for the scientists to work in. This was a quick sketch to see how much I could fit into the island, it was also good to decide where I would position everything. I then did a mind map of things that I wanted to have on the island so that I would have a better idea of how to start. I wanted to put a lot of cool things onto my map for the residents to enjoy so there’s a bar street full of pubs and clubs, an area packed with funky restaurants and even little hiking trails and footpaths… View Post

In small groups we had to discuss Utopia and Dystopia, thinking about all the things we could relate to these themes. At the moment there’s lots of new movies, books and tv series that link perfectly to these! Some of my favourites being The Hunger Games books, the movie Lobster and Charlie Brooker’s TV series called Black Mirror. Lobster is a film that I watched recently and as soon as I heard the themes I knew to include this one. I absolutely loved its unusual, weird storyline and this has inspired me to think outside the box for my island idea. In the film, people go to this odd hotel to find love and, after 30 days, if they haven’t found their perfect match they get turned into an animal of their choice, odd I know! The main character chooses to be a lobster – I won’t give anything away but this film really got the cogs in my head spinning… I had lots of potential ideas, taking little bits of inspiration from things on the mind map, and so I decided to do another mind map based only on my island. My goal for the lecture was to come… View Post
