This module is a really exciting one, there’s so much potential for amazing work and so I am really motivated to try my hardest and to dive straight into the deep end! This module is called Word and Image and it follows the theme of Utopia and Dystopia. Utopia is a perfect place and dystopia is the opposite – a terrible place. We have been told to create our very own island that is based around these themes, we had to stick to a real life concept and so we couldn’t use magic or anything fantastical. We couldn’t just make up a bizarre island either, we had to really think it through by picking a real life island to put it on, we had to imagine why the world needed this island and we had to give the island a history – showing how we had arrived at this idea. Once we came up with a concept we then had to start bringing our islands to life by drawing out a map of it. We were shown the video below to inspire us, so that we had a detailed idea of what we actually had to create. After watching this video I had so many ideas swarming about in my mind of what I wanted to do, however after mind mapping and discussing ideas with class mates I finally arrived at my final idea which was Robotopia.
Robotopia (Robot – Utopia)
Robotopia is an island that has replaced Ireland. This island exists way into the future so technology is advanced. A major epidemic killed off a large percentage of the human population, and eradicated the entire population of Ireland, leaving a lonely island with nothing left behind.
Due to dwindling population numbers, the world decided that they had to come up with a solution and this was robots. There was no longer enough man power to sustain the world, and so the world’s best scientists started to create robots to work in factories, farm lands, care for the sick, educate our children and police the world. Robots have become the only way in which the human race can survive and grow as they don’t need to be paid, they can work long hours and never have to sleep or eat.
However, there is a law that has been passed all over the globe which says: You must find love and reproduce children by the age of 30 or else you will be seen as an unnecessary life form who isn’t contributing to repopulation, therefore you will be sacrificed and turned into a robot in order to fulfil needs elsewhere. As a way of helping Singletons to find love, the leaders of the world redesigned Ireland into Robotopia, which is a love haven full of exciting places to find a soulmate. The law states that at the age of 25, one must go and live in Robotopia for 5 years and find their soul mate in this time frame, if one doesn’t find love then they become government property and will be turned into a robot.
As you can see, this concept has a very dark undertone, not only are you forced to find love, you are also seen as property for the government to experiment with and play with as they please. This is a world where human rights are fundamentally flawed, meaning that you can no longer live your life with the freedom that humans once had.
However, the actual island of Robotopia is a utopian society, full of fun and exciting places for young adults to enjoy. There are no stresses or cares in Robotopia, you don’t have to pay bills, you don’t have to work, you don’t have to dress a certain way, all you have to do is find love and you are placed in a bubble where that is your only worry.
I am very happy with this concept, I feel that this island is a really interesting topic to explore and experiment with. I am excited to start work on this immediately, I have so many ideas for how I was to portray my island and how I am going to advertise it and illustrate it. I think the idea is simple but also has potential to become a really detailed and impressive idea to expand upon week by week. I just can’t wait to start creating places, characters and bringing it to life.
Read my next post to see the map of my island that I have created! Hope you are as excited as I am, what do you think of my idea? Any comments and suggestions are really helpful so please feel free to express your opinions freely, don’t worry I won’t turn you into a robot!
